Pointing Services Built for Media, PA Properties

Mortar is the sacrificial element of any masonry wall — it is designed to fail before the brick or stone does. When joints erode, water gets behind the face and freeze-thaw cycling does the rest. SMG Plastering INC repoints brick and stone walls, chimneys, garden walls, foundations and porches throughout Media, Philadelphia and Delaware County's many century-old neighborhoods.

We cut out deteriorated mortar to the correct depth with hand tools and controlled grinding, never damaging the masonry face, then repack joints in lifts with a mortar mix matched to the original in hardness, color and sand texture. On older buildings this matters enormously: modern high-strength portland mortar on soft historic brick will spall the brick itself. We specify lime-based mixes where the wall calls for it.

Joint profiles are tooled to match what's already there — concave, weathered, raked, flush or beaded — so the repair reads as original masonry rather than a patch. Chimneys receive additional attention at the crown, flashing and cap, where the majority of water intrusion begins.

If you see crumbling mortar you can scratch out with a key, white efflorescence, loose or shifting brick, or damp interior walls behind a masonry exterior, it's time. We inspect for free, photograph the conditions, and deliver a written scope within 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pointing Questions, Answered

Can you match the original mortar color and texture on a historic home?

Yes. We evaluate the existing mortar's color, aggregate and hardness, then blend a matching mix and tool the joint to the original profile. Sample panels are available on larger or historically sensitive projects.

How often does brick need repointing?

Well-built masonry in the Delaware Valley typically needs repointing every 25–50 years, though chimneys, parapets and south-facing walls weather faster. Spot repointing of the worst elevations is often all that's required.

Is repointing worth it, or should the wall be rebuilt?

If the masonry units themselves are sound and the wall is plumb, repointing is far more economical and preserves original material. Bulging, displaced or heavily spalled sections may need partial rebuilding — we'll show you exactly which areas and why.
